Some people prefer to use judges instead of ministers as officiants for their wedding ceremonies. While they frequently conduct weddings, they also work with divorce settlement cases. Using a justice of the peace often means that you can avoid going to trial at a court. While Justices of the Peace were originally commissioned to literally keep the peace, in today's society they are often used for either performing marriage ceremonies, or presiding over a court for smaller disputes. For example, a Justice of the Peace may dispense justice in a court that hears misdemeanor cases, traffic violations, and other petty criminal infractions. A Justice of the Peace may also preside over disputes involving landlords and tenants, small debts, or other types of cases that would be heard in small claims court proceedings. People who wish to be married by someone without religious affiliation often turn to a Justice of the Peace to perform the ceremony.
